The 2019 Mazda CX-5 is the next in line to get a turbo engine
Over the last few years, the Mazda CX-5 has become one of the most popular mid-size CUVs on the market. While the CX-5 is a splendid vehicle as it stands, a little more power is never a bad thing. The 2019 Mazda CX-5 that will be arriving soon at Rudolph Mazda of El Paso, TX has a surprise or two up its sleeve for prospective buyers. It’s all but official that a 2.5T engine will be an option this year. Here’s what you can expect from the 2019 CX-5 this coming fall.
Engine and Transmission Specs
The big change we’re all looking forward to is the introduction of Mazda’s SkyActiv-G 2.5T turbo inline-four as an option. Previously available to CX-9 buyers only, it produces an astounding 227 hp and 310 lb-ft of torque. The current non-turbo 2.5 L engine found in the 2018 CX-5 cranks out 187 hp and 186 lb-ft of torque. As per usual, the 2019 CX-5 will come in four-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive configurations. Each variant will be paired with Mazda’s latest SkyActiv-Drive six-speed automatic transmission.
Performance on the Open Road
With the addition of the 2.5T engine, the performance ceiling of the CX-5 will be raised substantially. For instance, a 2.5T-equipped CX-9 can hit 60 mph in just 7.1 seconds. With a maximum curb weight of 3,650 pounds, a 2.5T-powered CX-5 should reach 60 mph in under 7 seconds. Expect to see the 2019 CX-5’s braking distance hold steady at 180 feet. Fuel economy for a 2.5T CX-5 should be about 23 mpg around town and 30 mpg on the highway.
Exterior and Interior Styling
The 2019 CX-5 won’t undergo any major design changes and should look more or less identical to the 2018 iteration. It’s likely that we’ll see wider LED headlights and a slightly tweaked trapezoidal grille on the front end. There will also be a new paint color option called Soul Red Crystal. Cloth upholstery and leather trim remains standard on the entry-level Sport version. Leather seats are available on higher trims like the Grand Touring. Interior color options include Parchment, Silk Beige and Black.
Safety and Infotainment Features
As far as driver-safety features go, the CX-5 comes with more than enough features to prevent collisions. For example, the Sport trim boasts Smart City Brake Support, Advanced Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Traffic Alert and Hill Launch Assist by default. The Mazda Connect infotainment system is controlled on all trim levels by a 7-inch touchscreen display. Support for SiriusXM, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are options on higher trim levels. Every CX-5 comes with a pair of USB ports for charging mobile electronics. Trim Offerings and Packages
Upgrading from the Sport trim to either the Touring or Grand Touring variants will add niceties like 19-inch alloys and heated front seats. The high-end Grand Touring edition comes with the full i-ActiveSense safety suite. It’s possible that Mazda will add the Signature trim level found on the CX-9 to the CX-5. A Signature Mazda adds wood trim accents to the cabin and upgraded lighting to the exterior. A Preferred Equipment Package adds the Mazda Navigation System and a power liftgate to lower trim levels for $1,200.
Pricing and Release Dates
According to the most reliable information available, the 2019 CX-5 is slated to hit the streets at some point this November. A Sport CX-5 without the 2.5T will retail for about $26,000. The top-of-the-line Grand Touring CX-5 will probably sport an MSRP of roughly $30,000. Upgrading from front-wheel-drive to all-wheel-drive on any given trim will cost buyers a cool $1,300. Opting for a 2.5-liter turbo will likely bump up the price of any given CX-5 by at least $1,000.
